You thought the situation around facebook and its weird understanding of privacy had improved?
Well, think again. As ‘Wired’ recently published, Zuckerberg & Co. go into a different direction entirely.

Well, I have to admint I do not understand this problem. If one wants to have private information just don’t post them on Facebook. It seems quite simple to me but maybe I don’t see the entire picture. In the end nothing is private on the web.
Basically true. If you put something on the web – not just on facebook – you have to expect and probably hope that people read this information.
The problems start, when this information gets used either without your consent or when your consent is being taken from you by means of confusing terms and conditions and user unfriendly management of privacy settings.
And what about informatin about me, not published by me, but my “friends” or even deducted from things I “like”? This information gets used and sold without you ever knowing about it. And this is not even the worst case – is just about money.
It gets more complex if we enter the realm of personal/private data. E.g. the last party, where one gets drunk and some friend takes pictures to publish them. Some time later you apply for a job and your potential employer googles you (and make no mistake – they do). Pictures of a totally drunk and half naked job applicant are likely to diminish this applicants odds for getting the job.
So no, it is not as simple as “nothing is private on the web”. It is about having control about what information gets there about oneself and who may see it.
Well to me it’s still that simple.
If I want an certain image projected about me on the web I’m careful in what I post and that is it. Your real control ends the second you entered that information. And if someone finds himself in a similar situation you described one cannot do anything about that because you can’t stop the guy who made the picture from posting it.
